My Election Rant
I saw Clinton speak at a rally here in New Orleans the first time he was running for President. It was on the river front and they used the Natchez as a background. Gore did a suprisingly sprited warm-up and then Clinton came on and tore the house down! He is a master of the stump speech.
After it was over, Bill, (my lover, hehe, not Clinton) said "lets walk this way" and we were somehow right in line to meet and shake hands with Gore first, and then Clinton second. I told Clinton that he had done a great job with the speech and he thanked me and then said "Please vote for me this fall." It was 9:30 PM and he had been up since a 6:30 AM breakfast campaign stop with three cities on the way, but he was totally focused for those few seconds on me; he seemed totally sincere and worthy of my trust and admiration. It was an amazing feeling.
Of course this is a skill that all politicians have to some extent, (he did the same thing to the next person in line) but Clinton was then and still is extremely charismatic. And for a leader of a republic, charisma is the charm, so to speak.
And that's why the Republicans hated him so much. They had no one then who could come close to Clinton for that quality, not since Ronnie, and they had no one waiting in the wings. So they were out for eight years.
I'm not going to rehash the last election here, it's old news. This was not the first time that an election was tainted in our American history, not by a long shot, but given the fact that it happened when it did during this period after World War Two when our country has changed so much, it was significant; we progressed furthur towards being a nation always at war, always ready to fight and totally unable to make peace.
This road was taken because it's profitable for some of the people in power, (and has been since our first war), not because it was the best long term solution politically or economically for our country. The people who try to drive us down this road do so because they believe that they are chosen to survive the chaos of our form of government. They find it messy and annoying and can't wait for it to fail so they can take charge of what's left. And they work hard to make sure that they have the resouces to survive, no matter what the cost to the rest of us.
And trust me here, those of us on this message board are not on their list of the survivors, no matter who you vote for.
So.
To me these are the big questions as we get ready to vote:
What kind of country do we want to be? An agressive warrior nation or an influential economic power in the world?
Exactly how much of our GNP do we want to commit to aggressive world action and how much to the well-being of our citizens?
How important to you is the separation of church and state? Do you want a leader that claims that his personal God guides his hand as he rules your country?
This is going to be an important election.
Luca told me tonight, that he saw an interview with Walter Cronkite, where Walter said that he didn't think that we would know who won until spring. It could happen. And it would put us in the most precarious position that we've ever been in as a nation; stock market in chaos, foreign policy in disarray, a war in progress without a plan... it could happen.
So vote, each and everyone of ya! Vote like your life depends on it, because I think that this time it really does.
It's been a while since I've done anything with the journal, and I apologize... I've been busy, lots of work, but good still...
I did receive an MVP award recently at our regional yearly meeting. And that was a good thing. The career thing is on track.
I am so looking forward to Vegas in January; it looks like we will have a record number of people there and it will be great to meet some new people from the boards!
And I'll try to get some Halloween pics up tomorrow. We have a motorcycle convention in town, a tattoo convention in town and 8,000 wealthy gay men for the big circuit party... shoud be some material there...
